4 Tips to Get Your Primary Closet Organized

A cluttered closet makes getting dressed harder than it needs to be. When everything has a place—and only the things you truly wear remain—your space starts working for you. In this post, I’ll walk you through how to simplify, streamline, and organize your primary closet so it feels calm, functional, and effortless to maintain.

  1. Matching Hangers:

Slimline from Costco (2 of the 50 packs for $35) are the most inexpensive option, but you can find these almost anywhere (also at Amazon, Target, The Container Store). This is definitely the easiest way to make your closet feel like a boutique. It saves on space, and immediately upgrades your closet to feel more streamlined!

2. Edit frequently:

I recommend doing this every season. Sometimes it’s overwhelming to decide what stays and what goes but we are here to help.

  1. Turn all hangers around. When you wear an item, flip the hanger around so you can see what you’ve worn. If a hanger is still facing the other way after 1 year (four full seasons) it is time to let it go.

  2. One in, One out. Don’t buy more hangers once you set your systems in the closet!

  3. Less is More. If it’s not a HECK YES it’s a ‘No’.

3. File Folding

This is my favorite way to see your folded clothes, standing them up vertically. Think of it like a file cabinet, digging through to find the paper you want. You can do this inside dresser drawers, or on shelves with a basket. You do NOT have to be perfect here, but it is worth the time it takes to stack t-shirts, shorts, and jeans this way.

4. Donation Bin:

Everyday habits are the KEY to staying organized. I recommend putting a labeled bin in your closet for anything that you try on, but you take right back off because you dislike the fit/style/how it makes you feel. It’s time to donate that bad boy, don’t let it take up anymore space in your closet! Then once it’s full, it’s time to take to your preferred charity as a donation.
